“Christmas Eve at the Julibee Motel is a taut, disturbing tale of confused passions and sexual desires that flirts with violence.” “Director Tom Mackan gives Bandler's piece a graceful ebb and flow, connecting the dots in a puzzle that purposely doesn't reveal itself completely.” |
|
“The performances of both Aimee Kessler Evans and James Thomas were compelling.” “There was a moment when I felt there was no way all the loose ends could be tied together before the play ends. Then the details of the characters' life stories are revealed in a very satisfying way.” “If you are in the mood for a good adult suspense drama, then do go and see this play!” |

“John Bandler’s area debut with Julibee Motel worth the wait,” wrote Tom Mackan in The View on July 17, 2010 about our 2010 production of Christmas Eve at the Julibee Motel. “There’s a film waiting to be made of this play.” “Not to say it doesn’t work on stage, but dear readers, it is haunted for this viewer by the ghosts of new wave cinema of the 50s and 60s. Local writer John Bandler makes his area debut at Fringe with this well-crafted and searching story.” “Bandler owes a debt to the European film writers of the mid-20th century, a debt to the likes of Renoir, Godard, and even Hitchcock, in his tale of the seemingly inadvertent and random encounter.” |
Plot Summary
Christmas Eve finds Cassie about to close her Julibee Motel when a storm sweeps
in the well-heeled Mick. She insists her motel is closed. He wants a room at any
price. His name is familiar, but she doesn’t let on. Instead, she kicks their
hard-core banter into a rollercoaster of confessions, threats, and unfulfilled
desires. As they struggle, Mick must decide whether he wants to die, Cassie must
decide whether she wants him to live.
